Kristen Chanas & David Murphy
28th August 2019
HOW DID YOU MEET
It was a combination of public holiday boredom and some friends playing cupid that lead to us meeting – a secret sharing of photos back and forth by friends, and an impromptu rooftop house party, were soon followed by a few dates and a forced Harry Potter movie marathon - from then we were pretty much inseparable.
YOUR ENGAGEMENT STORY
We were in Norway celebrating a friend’s 40th Birthday – and thought it’d be a great idea to conquer the 23km Trolltunga hike for some death-defying views to celebrate. After a long 6 hour hike, and with the help of some trusty Norwegian mountain goats, David cornered me on a sheer cliff, knowing full well I couldn’t run away (hahaha), and dropped the knee – much to my surprise (I almost backed off the cliff!), and to the cheers of onlookers and friends.
GROOM + GROOMSMEN ATTIRE
In keeping with the non-traditional attire – David wore a floral printed shirt in pale grey linen suit, and groomsmen were in matching pale grey chinos, white shirts and tan accessories. All purchased from all over the place!
PREPARATION – COUNTDOWN BEGINS
After our time spent living in London together, it was a long-running joke in our relationship that we’d love to be a Lord and Lady one day. So as a secret wedding morning surprise, I gifted David with a plot of land in the United Kingdom in our names – which automatically made us a Lord & Lady, so we were married that day as Lord David & Lady Kristen!
HAIR & MAKEUP
I went for a boho glam look! Relaxed curls with touches of florals and braids throughout, paired with smokey eyes and pops of pinks/purples to accentuate the florals in my dress. Ranny Bronzer is an absolute queen and made myself and my bridesmaids feel like absolute goddesses!
JEWELLERY & ACCESSORIES
All of the jewelry for the bridesmaids (earrings, necklaces & double anklets) were handmade by yours truly!
I’m not one for traditional anything, so I opted for Rue De Seine’s flowy and floral printed Nahla gown. It was an absolute DREAM.
I designed these myself and had them made by a shoemaker in Bali – I then hand beaded them with pearls and cowrie shells.
I gave my girls the option to choose their own dress! Anything that would tie in with the white lace detail from my Nahla dress ☺
WEDDING LOCATION/ VENUE
Pandawa Cliff Estate, Bali, Indonesia – We chose Pandawa for it’s expansive lawns (so many design options!) and unbeatable clifftop views!
WEDDING SONGS : Walking down the aisle - Our aisle song was a live acoustic cover of a song that David used to sing to me and play on guitar. It was a surprise for David on the day ☺
We had one of our best friends Tim write and conduct the ceremony – he’s a bit of scallywag, so the ceremony was filled with plenty of laughs, and was truly authentic and heartfelt.
We went for a beachside boho vibe throughout – bleached whites, neutral creams and dried tan arrangements. Corals, shells, crystals, frosted signage, woven bamboo furniture and relaxed floor set-ups.
We opted for cocktail-style ceremony seating, to give the ceremony a more relaxed vibe and make everyone feel involved.
Our bridesmaids and groomsmen also each took part in the ceremony by writing a ‘vow’ for us as a couple. Some examples of the ones they came out with (which were all a surprise on the day);
Do you promise to always hold each other hands, and grab each other’s butts – even when they’re old and wrinkly?
Will you bite each other in the zombie apocalypse, so you can truly spend the rest of your lives together?
WEDDING PLANNER/ WEDDING STYLIST
The whole planning and design process was utterly seamless! Kira from Hitch’d Weddings & Events (absolute QUEEN) was our planner, and after providing her with our inspo images, she created the wedding day of our dreams – and ran it all to perfection too, so all we had to do was sit back with a Lychee Martini and take it all in! She knows exactly what she is doing and nothing was ever too much – even with an OTT couple like ourselves!
WHAT MARRIAGE MEANS TO YOU
In the end, marriage really is just a piece of paper – but there is something so special about getting to spend a whole day surrounded by your favourite people on the planet, all celebrating your love and commitment to each other – followed by getting to spend the rest of your life with your favourite weirdo!
With David working in construction, a ring didn’t really make sense for him! So we opted to exchange initialed tattoos on our wedding day instead! We exchanged the tattoo stencils during the ceremony, and we were then whisked off to get them inked onsite immediately after the ceremony. While we were getting tattooed, all of our guests also had the opportunity to sign up to get tattooed themselves the following day at our recovery party!
FOOD & BEVERAGES
Cocktail style service! Zero regrets - as it made for a truly social dynamic and got all of our guests from all over the world chatting and mingling.
RECEPTION DÉCOR DETAILS
As for the reception – cocktail style dinner service gave us much more freedom to work in the space. We had the dancefloor as our focal point (most important element!), surrounded by high, low and floor seating options, a whiskey bar, photo wall and shisha den!
We didn’t have a registry and requested no gifts – however much to our surprise, my sister had sneakily arranged a guest book and donations towards our honeymoon from the guests! It was such a beautiful surprise, and such a special honeymoon because of everyone’s kindness!
THE FLOWERS & BOUQUETS
Truly boho styling to it’s core – masses of stunning preserved florals and palms, and touches of crisp white orchids. Made from Sandat Floral is an absolute magician and his ability to source everything still blows my mind!
YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT
The ceremony will always hold a super special place in our hearts – but we honestly could not narrow it down to even one or two moments. From getting tattooed, and flipping around on the dancefloor with fireworks, to whacking piñatas, smoking shisa, sipping whiskey, snacking from live food stations and watching firedancers & water drummers – the whole day was simply, without fail, the best day of our lives.
We are the kind of people who don’t know when to call it a day – so we kept the party going the next day at our recovery party. A much more mellow vibe for sure, Hitch’d arranged a second spectacular day for us filled with tattooists, custom coconuts, mimosa bar, bean bags, pool floaties, tattooists & food platters.
Sunnie Heers was our photographer – we were drawn to her stunning photography because of it’s relaxed and ‘glowing’ feel. As she spends much of her time travelling to shoot couples in locations all over USA, we knew she was the one.
No cake! We threw tradition out the window and instead went for a PINATA! We each took it in turns to have a swing at the piñatas blindfolded, which (after many failed attempts, ending with getting the bridal party involved), eventually spilled out with lollies and mini bottles of our favourite shots!
First Dance – Our first dance song was a live acoustic cover of ‘Cinema – Benny Benassi’. We had learnt a choreographed dance for it especially, complete with flips and pyrotechnics. Safe to say we were nervous wrecks up until that was over!
We had Lydia Rose & Sammy Sax to provide the tunes for the day – they are a live band that progressively changes vibe from day to night! Starting off with mellow acoustic vibes for the ceremony and cocktail hour, followed by full band sets, which then overlapped with Sammy Sax on the decks and played us through to the end of the evening.
DID YOU STICK WITH THE TRADITION OF FAVORS /BONBONNIERE?
At the end of the evening everyone took home a customized drawstring bag filled with everything to make the inevitable hangover more bearable – along with a handwritten thank-you card.
IF YOU COULD GIVE OTHER BRIDES ONE PIECE OF ADVICE...
If you’re getting married overseas – GET A WEDDING PLANNER! It is easily the single best investment we made in our whole day, as it was 1000 times more stunning than we could’ve ever imagined and was entirely stress free, even with everything going on!
HONEYMOON TIME BABY!!!
After 2 flights, a 2-hr car trip and a boat ride, David pulled off an incredible surprise honeymoon at Pulo Cinta Eco Resort (translates to Love Island) in Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is a group of over water bungalows on a heart-shaped sand bank in the middle of the ocean – complete with the most insanely uninterrupted ocean views and direct reef access you could imagine. Safe to say all the travelling (and almost missed connections) were SO worth it.
